Enable SSH on version 0.7.2 r3

This guide will show you how to enable SSH on firmware version 0.7.2 r3.

In able to do this hack, you will need a router in addtion to the Fonera. This router is used to point to the Kolofonium DNS server and pass it down to the Fonera. Here is what your network should look like after everything is done:

fonera firmware flash network config

1.

Enter your router's configuration page and edit the following settings:

  • LAN IP Address: 213.134.45.129

  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Primary and Secondary DNS Servers: 88.198.165.155

Router Configuration

2.

Power on the Fonera and connect it to the router. Connect to the Fonera wirelessly using the "MyPlace" access point and your serial # as the WPA key. Direct your browser to "192.168.10.1" and you will see the page below.

fonera main config page

3.

Go to "Advanced" and then to "Internet Connection". Here, you will have to change a few things:

  • Mode: Static IP

  • IP Address: 213.134.45.200

  • Network Mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Gateway: 213.134.45.129

  • DNS Server: 213.134.45.129

fonera configuration settings

4.

Click "Submit" and then hold down the reset button on the Fonera for 30 seconds. This will force the Fonera to force an auto update check. Once it sees the Kolofonium server, it will downgrade itself to version 0.7.1 r1. Wait 3-5 minutes after reseting before checking on success. To see if everything went fine, connect wirelessly and browse to "192.168.1.1". This is what you should see:

downgrade fonera version 0.7.1 r1 firmware flash

5.

If the above didn't work, try it again. Make sure to hold the reset button down for at least 30 seconds. If everything went well, download this script (Right Click, Save As) which will send a command to the Fonera and tell it to enable SSH. Open the file in your web browser, like Firefox, and click on the "Submit" button.

html attack script fonera

Code:

<html>

<head>

</head>

<body>

<center>

<form method="post" action="http://192.168.10.1/cgi-bin/webif/connection.sh " enctype="multipart/form-data">

<input name="username" value="$(/etc/init.d/dropbear)" size="68" >

<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit" onClick="{this.form.wifimode.value='";' + this.form.wifimode.value +';"'}" />

</form>

</body>

</html>

6.

After you hit "Submit", you should be redirected to the Fonera.

fonera hacks

SSH should now be enabled. Connect wirelessly to the Fonera and try to SSH into "192.168.10.1"

7. (Important)

After enabling SSH, immediately connect to the Fonera via SSH.

enable ssh on fonera

The "ssh_fonera_enable.html" script only enables SSH for one instance. That means, if you reboot or turn the Fonera off, you will lose SSH access all together and you will have to run the "ssh_fonera_enable.html" script again.

To enable SSH permanently, you will need to enter the command:

mv /etc/init.d/dropbear /etc/init.d/S50dropbear

SSH is now enabled permanently. Click "Next" to continue to the rest of the flashing process.

La Fonera&Whisher

La Fonera Whisher signal patch
--------------------------------------------------

You might have heard about Whisher.com, the idea is similar to the one FON has.
But Whisher is hardware independent and the signal is encrypted.
That's why I like it, but I would have to use the "MyPlace" signal of the Fonera.
That would allow everybody to access my private LAN and of course I don't want that.
Due to this I added another signal to my Fonera.

This patch will add a third signal to your Fonera, an WPA encrypted one.
You'll have "MyPlace", "FON_AP" and the new one: "WHISHER_AP"
But it's not possible to access your private LAN from this signal.
This makes it perfect for use with Whisher.

Installation:
There is just one small and uncritical change to the original Fonera files.
Just download and extract the archive to the root of your Fonera:
root@LaFonera:~# wget http://fon.freddy.eu.org/fonera/whisher-signal-patch/LaFonera-Whisher-signal-patch-101.tar.gz
root@LaFonera:~# tar -xzf LaFonera-Whisher-signal-patch-101.tar.gz -C /
Now you should edit /etc/config/whisher (You just should change the password).
root@LaFonera:~# vi /etc/config/whisher
Now you just have to reboot your Fonera.

If it doesn't work for you, please inform me.

To remove it again just remove all the new files:
/etc/config/whisher
/etc/init.d/S30whisher_prepare
/etc/init.d/N55whisher
/etc/dnsmasq_whisher.conf

FreeWlan Add-ons

Before installing the add-ons ¶
It's very important for the installation of the add-ons to make sure your La Fonera's firmware version (in the EEPROM and the /jffs directory) is 0.7.1r1!

To ensure this, proceed with the following steps:

Plug off your La Fonera from the Internet. Never ever reconnect La Fonera to the Internet during the whole installation process unless you are told to do so!
Reboot your La Fonera and wait until this in finished. This will take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Reset your La Fonera by pressing the reset button on the underside for 15 seconds. (Caution: As a result of the reset all settings and changes are lost, so you may wish to take some notes on the current settings if you're not sure how to setup the Fonera with your own network again, especially the type of connection, IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server!)
Let your La Fonera reboot without a connection to the Internet and wait until this in finished. This will take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Call La Fonera's management interface (~webinterface) (if connected via WLAN to MyPlace use IP 192.168.10.1, if connected via LAN use IP 169.254.255.1) and check the shown firmware version. Depending on the (result of the reset and the) shown firmware version there are four different ways how to go on:
If your La Fonera's firmware version is below 0.7.1r1 go on with Upgrading La Fonera to FON's firmware version 0.7.1r1.
If your La Fonera's firmware version is 0.7.1r1 go on with How to install the add-ons.
If your La Fonera's firmware version is higher than 0.7.1r1 but lower than 0.7.2r1 go on with Enabling SSH access to la Fonera and installing the add-ons by using the Kolofonium hack.
If your La Fonera's firmware version is 0.7.2r1 or higher you need a flash cable to gain SSH access to your La Fonera and to install the add-ons. Go on with Offline installation by using a flash cable.

Upgrading La Fonera to FON's firmware version 0.7.1r1 ¶
Download FON's firmware version 0.7.1r1 (1,93 MB) to that computer you will use to connect to La Fonera.
Call La Fonera's management interface (~webinterface) (if connected via WLAN to MyPlace use IP 192.168.10.1, if connected via LAN use IP 169.254.255.1) and go to 'Advanced' and 'Firmware upgrade'. (You will have to log in as user 'root' with the password 'admin'.)
Now select the downloaded firmware file and wait until all is done. This will take 10 to 20 minutes. So please be patient and don't touch La Fonera! If the upgrade is refused (and the selected file is ok) it's because you have a firmware version lower than 0.7.0r4. In this case you will have to upgrade to 0.7.0r4 first (download the files from http://k0k0.k1k2.de/downloads please) and upgrade to 0.7.1r1 afterwards.
After all is done go on with How to install the add-ons.

How to install the add-ons ¶
Installing the FreeWLAN add-ons only takes a few simple steps. The only requirements are:

La Fonera with FON's firmware version 0.7.1r1 installed (in the EEPROM and the /jffs directory).
The possibility to connect La Fonera to the Internet. (Exempt from the Offline installation by using a WLAN or LAN connection and the Offline installation by using a flash cable.)
A computer capable to connect to La Fonera's WLAN signal. (Exempt from the Offline installation by using a flash cable.)
There are currently four (maybe five) different ways to install the add-ons onto your La Fonera:

Enabling SSH access to la Fonera and installing the add-ons by using the Kolofonium hack
If you cannot use a static IP address
Offline installation by using a WLAN or LAN connection
Offline installation by using a flash cable
Other installation methods

Enabling SSH access to la Fonera and installing the add-ons by using the Kolofonium hack ¶
This way is most convenient of all and works with all versions of FON's firmware from 0.7.1r1 to 0.7.1r5. (If you cannot connect your La Fonera to the Internet using a static IP address, you will have to go one of the other ways.)

Call La Fonera's management interface (~webinterface) (if connected via WLAN to MyPlace use IP 192.168.10.1, if connected via LAN use IP 169.254.255.1) and go to 'Advanced' and 'Internet connection'. (You will have to log in as user 'root' with the password 'admin'.)
Change the mode to 'static IP' and set the DNS server to 88.198.165.155 and the remaining settings according to your needs.
Go now to 'Public WiFi' and change the signal name (~SSID) from FON_AP to FON_ADDON.
Connect La Fonera to the Internet and reboot it. Now the SSH access will be enabled and the FreeWLAN add-ons will be installed automatically. This takes about 10 to 20 minutes. So please be patient and don't touch La Fonera and don't disconnect it from the Internet. After all is done, don't forget to change the Internet connection settings (IP address, subnet mask, gateway & DNS server) once more to fit your needs.

Offline installation ¶
Using this way makes you independed from having access to the Internet. This way works for all versions of FON's firmware starting from 0.7.1r1.
